Image is a three-quarter standing view of Alfred Ballinger as a 2nd Lieutenant. He wears a dark shell jacket with shoulder straps, dark military vest and light trousers. His forage cap is on a pedestal next to him on which his right arm rests. Only the top button of his jacket is fastened.
Image is clear and clean with very good contrast. Mount has been trimmed.
Reverse has photographer’s imprint for F. GUTEKUNST, Philadelphia.

Alfred Ballinger was 37 years old when he enlisted as 1st Sergeant in Company B, 90th Pennsylvania Infantry at Philadelphia on September 18, 1861. He was commissioned 2nd Lieutenant on January 4, 1863 and was discharged as a member of Company I on November 20, 1864.
The 90th Pennsylvania was engaged at 2nd Bull Run, South Mountain, Antietam, Fredericksburg, Gettysburg, Mine Run, Wilderness, Spotsylvania and Petersburg. The regiment lost 6 officers and 224 enlisted men killed, died of wounds and disease as well as many more wounded.
Ballinger’s name appears on the Pennsylvania Monument at Gettysburg showing that he was present for that action. [ad]
