Robert M. Huntington was 29 year old resident of Kalamazoo, MI, who was mustered as a private into Co. “I”, 6th Michigan Infy, 8/23/1861. He was promoted to Asst. Huntington’s first unit, 6th Michigan Infy, organized 8/20/1861, served primarily in the Dept. of the Gulf arriving at Ship Island, Miss., 3/13/1862. It took part in action against Ft. Philip & St. Jacques and was one of the first regiment to occupy New Orleans. During Huntington’s time with the 6th, the unit was engaged at the Battle of Baton Rouge, and involved in the expedition to Bayou Teche. Later converted to Heavy Artillery, the 6th was engaged in the Siege of Port Hudson, and still later, the 1865 Siege of Spanish Fort. Mustered out in August, it was mustered out Sept. 5, 1865. During service it lost 78 men killed and wounded and 504 men by disease for a total of 582.

Huntington’s second unit, 73rd Regiment, USCT, was organized 4/4/1864, attached to 1st Brigade, 1st Division, Corps de Afrique, Dept. of the Gulf. Served in the 1864 Red River Campaign, later transferred to Pensacola, later joining on the 1865 assault and capture of Fort Blakeley, AL, and the occupation of Mobile. Consolidated with the 96th USCT, the unit was mustered out, 9/27, 1865. During service the 73rd lost 46 men killed and mortally wounded and 174 to disease for a total of 220.
