CDV is a chest-up view of a Union soldier in uniform named Joseph Messer Clough.  He is wearing a dark colored, double-breasted coat with shoulder boards. The bottom of the mount is marked with the handwritten inscription, “J CLOUGH”.

Reverse of image is not marked with a photographer’s imprint.  There is a handwritten inscription on the reverse which reads, “COL. JOSEPH M. CLOUGH, LT. 1ST NHV, CAPT. 4TH NHV 9-19-61, WD 7-30-64 CRATER PETEBG, MO 9-12-64, COL 18TH NHV 10-18-64 LT COL, WD FORT STEDMAN, BVT BRIG GENERAL VOLS, B. 1828 D. 1919, SEE BVT. GENERALS IN BLUE P.117”.

Image is clear with good contrast. Some light surface dirt is present.

Joseph Messer Clough was born on June 14, 1828 in Sunapee, NH.  He enlisted at the age of 32 on April 26, 1861 as a 1st Lieutenant and on May 4, 1861 was commissioned into Co. “H”, 1st NH Infantry. He was mustered out on August 9, 1861 at Concord, NH. On September 18, 1861 he was commissioned into Co. “H”, 4th NH Infantry where he was promoted to a Captain. He was discharged on September 17, 1864. On October 18, 1864 he was commissioned into Field & Staff 18th NH Infantry where he was promoted to a Lt. Colonel. He was promoted to Brig- General on March 13, 1865 by Brevet and later to a Colonel. He was mustered out on July 29, 1865.  He was wounded on July 30, 1864 in Petersburg, VA and also on March 29, 1865 at Fort Stedman, VA. He died on May 7, 1919 in New London, NH and is buried in Montcalm Cemetery in Enfield Center, NH.
