The 6th US Cavalry served with the Army of the Potomac and the Army of the Shenandoah. They were engaged at Brandy Station, Upperville, Fairfield, Gettysburg and North Anna.

During its service the regiment lost 3 officers and 156 enlisted men killed, died of wounds and disease.

Ferry’s obituary provides a good synopsis of his life:

“Lemuel Austin Ferry was born in North Bloomfield, Trumbull County, Ohio, on October 15, 1843, and was a son of Noble Ferry and Abigail Flower, natives of New England and pioneer settlers of Trumbull County. His early life was spent on a farm and his early education was secured in the district schools. On July 6, 1861, in his eighteenth year, he enlisted in the Regular army and was assigned to Company K, Sixth U.S. Cavalry. He saw three years of the hardest kind of service. Soon after the close of the war, Mr. Ferry entered Georgetown University, at Washington, D.C, taking a course in medicine and surgery. After graduating from that institution, he returned to Ohio and entered the practice of his chosen profession. After practicing in Ohio for a number of years he came to Illinois, locating at Eureka, where he practiced medicine until 1891, when he came to Geneseo.”

Dr. Ferry died on June 14, 1913 in Geneseo, Illinois. He is buried in Olio Township Cemetery in Eureka, Illinois.    [ad]
