This CDV bears a bust view image of Chief Engineer John F. McCutcheon. He wears a frock coat and small necktie. His shoulder boards bear the rank of chief engineer.

The card mount of this image has no border. The image shows some spotting and foxing throughout with several marks on the background. However, the image of McCutcheon is clear.

The reverse of this image shows a Keely backmark, which reads: “PHOTOGRAPHED BY / KEELY, / N.W. COR. FIFTH & COATES STS., PHILADELPHIA.” A blue 2-cent tax stamp is affixed to the back and has been cancelled by the photographer; it is signed “Keely.”

A period ink signature reads: “COMPLIMENTS OF CHIEF ENG. JOHN F. McCUTCHEON U.S.N.”

McCutcheon enlisted in the Navy in May of 1861 as Third Assistant Engineer. He rose through the ranks to Chief Engineer, a role which he fulfilled until he was discharged in April 1866. He reenlisted in August 1866 but his rank was revoked in December of the same year.

The image of this officer deserves more in-depth research to discover this engineer’s story.  [cls]
