Appointed Captain and Asst. Adjutant General of Robert Ransom’s N.C. Brigade on July 22, 1861. Promoted to Major and A.A.G. in June 1863. Rowland and Captain Jedediah Hotchkiss surrendered together following Lee’s surrender at Appomattox.
Rowland, as part of Ransom’s Brigade, participated at the Peninsula, the capture of Harpers Ferry, the Battle of Antietam, and the Battle of Fredericksburg, where Ransom's division had successfully defended Marye's Heights against the attacking Federals. In 1864 they fought in the defense of Drewry's Bluff and in the Shenandoah Valley in the battles of Monocacy and Fort Stevens.
