Oval waist-up view of doctor William Gilbert Hay in navy uniform. He is wearing a double-breasted frock coat with dress epaulettes. The grip of a sword is just visible in lower, right edge of image. Period pencil identification is below image. Photographer’s backmark, A.B. Fontaine & Co., Columbus, GA.

Dr. Hays was made Assistant Surgeon in September of 1854. Passed Asst. Surgeon in May 1859 and Surgeon in August 1861. He resigned in February 1862. Born in Georgia and died in 1875 and is buried in San Francisco.
