Reverse has photographer’s imprint for CHARLES D. FREDRICKS & CO…NEW YORK. There are three separate inscriptions on the reverse all are in period ink; two are in red ink and one in black. The red inscriptions read “SURG. WM. J. SLOAN U.S.A. ASST. MEDICAL DIRECTOR DEPT OF THE EAST” the other reads “WM. J. SLOAN USA ASST. MED DIR.” The black ink inscription reads “TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERN SURG. SLOAN IS A MUCH BETTER LOOKING MAN THAN THE ARTIST REPRESENTS HIM TO BE. C. A. P.”

William James Sloan was born in Pennsylvania in 1815. He was commissioned assistant surgeon in 1837; captain and assistant surgeon February 11, 1847; major and surgeon December 1855; colonel and medical director February 25, 1865; lieutenant colonel and colonel by brevet for meritorious service during the war; brigadier general by brevet September 1866 for meritorious and distinguished services at several military posts in New York harbor, “where cholera prevailed”; lieutenant colonel and surgeon June 1876 and colonel and surgeon April 1877.

During his long service Dr. Sloan served in the Seminole War, Mexican War and Civil War.

He died in St. Paul, Minnesota on March 17, 1880.  [ad] [p:L]
