Image shows bust view of Berlin in uniform coat. Image is clear with good contrast. Signed in ink under image “Jos. Berlin / 88th Pa.” Reverse has photographer’s imprint, J.R. Laughlin’s of Philadelphia, along with a pencil note, “Very sincerely your friend Jos. Berlin. Meadville, Crawford Co. Pa.”

Unfortunately, there is no record to be found of Joseph Berlin.

The 88th Pennsylvania was organized in September of 1861. They served in the Army of the Potomac from October, 1861 to March, 1862 when they were shifted to the defenses of Washington and the Department of the Rappahannock. In June of 1862 they joined the 3rd Corps in the Army of the Potomac and in September of that same year they were shifted to the 1st Corps where they remained until consolidation with the 5th Corps in early 1864.

The 88th saw action in 42 engagements including 2nd Bull Run, Antietam, Fredericksburg, Chancellorsville, Gettysburg, Wilderness, Spotsylvania, North Anna, Cold Harbor, Siege of Petersburg and Five Forks. The regiment suffered 181 deaths and many others wounded.  [jet][ph:L]
