Image shows a very young William Kline of the 88th Pennsylvania posed leaning on a cloth covered table with his right hand resting on his hip. He wears a dark forage cap and sack coat with light trousers.
Image has good clarity but the contrast is a bit light. Paper and mount have some light stains at top and light surface dirt throughout. Mount has a thin blue line border with the photographer’s imprint at bottom S. A. ENSMINGER… MANHEIM, PA.
Reverse has a cancelled, blue 2 cent tax stamp and an old light pencil inscription that reads “BILLIE KLEIN DRUMMER BOY 88TH PA. INF.”
William Kline was born February 29, 1848 in Pennsylvania. He was hired as a substitute on March 30, 1865 and assigned to Company A, 88th Pennsylvania Volunteers. He would have joined the regiment while it was sitting in front of Petersburg. He was mustered out on June 30, 1865. During Kline’s time with the 88th they were engaged at Hatcher’s Run and Five Forks.
William Kline died on March 7, 1907 and is buried in Beam German Reformed Church Cemetery in Jennerstown, Pennsylvania. [ad] [ph:L]
