The unknown subject of this CDV strikes a debonair pose leaning against a draped column. He wears what is known to be a gray double-breasted frock coat with matching trousers. The coat has cuffs that have been tinted red. The collar, which is covered by the subject’s beard was also red and the trousers also had a red welt. At his waist the subject wears a belt with a Pattern 1851 officer’s or NCO plate. Visible on the belt just below the subject’s left arm is a brass hook for attaching a sword.

Contrast and clarity are very good. Mount and paper have some minor surface dirt from age and storage also some minor edge wear. Bottom corners of the mount are marked C.K. BILL – NEW YORK.

Reverse has a decorative photographer’s imprint for C. K. BILL’S STUDIO… NEW YORK along with a dated cancelled orange 2 cent tax stamp. Cancellation date looks to be August 1865.

Image is from the collection of the late William A. Turner.
