Image is a three-quarter seated view of Tackett in the uniform of a VMI cadet.
Contrast and clarity are excellent. Paper has a small chip at upper left corner and the mount corners have been lightly clipped.
Reverse has a photographer’s imprint for WM. BURKE, FREDERICKSBURG, VA. Top right corner has a beautifully strong period ink inscription that reads “TRULY YOUR FRIEND JOHN F. TACKETT.
John Ford Tackett was born April 22, 1847 in Fredericksburg, Virginia. He attended a local high school and at age 16 he became a member of the Class of 1868 at VMI and during the battle of New Market he served as a private in Company B of the Cadet Battalion.
After the war Tackett was in the dry goods business. He died in Alexandria on March 30, 1908 and is buried in St. Paul’s Cemetery, Alexandria, Virginia. [ad] [ph:L]
