Three-quarter seated view of an unidentified Union musician. The subject wears a dark enlisted man’s kepi with an embroidered Infantry hunting horn insignia on the front. He also wears a dark frock coat with cloth epaulettes and a collar that is darker than the rest of the coat. The coat is buttoned down the front and appears to have the usual nine buttons. Each button is accentuated by a line of braid ending with a trefoil on each end. The cuffs have three buttons and a single galloon done in the shape of a trefoil. The subject also wears matching dark trousers with a thin light leg strap.

On his lap the soldier holds a brass horn of the “over the shoulder” or “backfire” variety. This means that when held in the playing position the instruments bell points to the rear so the unit marching behind the band can hear the music and keep step.

The image is clear with good contrast and is attached to the mount inside of a printed hanging frame. There is some light surface dirt throughout. The reverse of the mount is blank.  [AD] [PH:L]
