Clean clear image on glass of a young man with close cropped hair and the start of a goatee wearing a dark Zouave style jacket open at the front. The jacket is piped along each edge and covered with a line of ball buttons. Approx. 15 buttons are visible on each side of the jacket opening for a total of 30. Beneath the jacket the soldier wears a dark collared shirt with a button at the throat and two more spaced down the front.

Some spots appear on the jacket but these are from minor loss of surface finish on the reverse. Image is housed in a place brass mat and scrolled brass frame.

Image comes in a complete thermoplastic case with a raised geometric scrollwork decoration on front and back. Behind image is advertisement for S. Peck’s improved Union cases and Halverson’s patent. Patent dates listed are 1854, 55 and 56. Also in modern pencil is “10th NYZ” and “ALBANY ZOUAVES.” Case has two brass hinges with the top one being loose on one side. Case is chipped in this area. Inside of case has a brown cloth pad. Attached to the pad is a modern label with collector information.

The 10th New York State Militia was actually a battalion with Company A being composed of the Albany Zouave Cadets and Company B being the Washington Continentals. During the Civil War they served for 9 months as part of the 177th New York Infantry. The regiment served with the 19th Corps seeing most of its service at Port Hudson, Louisiana.  [ad]
