Very nice bust image of a woman identified as Elizabeth Scattergood. She exhibits a typical 1840’s-50’s hairstyle and wears a dark dress with a white lace collar and a cameo brooch.

Image has excellent clarity and contrast. However there are two tiny faint spots of discoloration on the subject’s right cheek.

Mat is plain around the edges but has a linear decoration at center. The left side of the mat has an area with heavy discoloration spots that thin out as they move around the edge of the image. The right side of the mat is mostly clean.

Light brown Union case is excellent. There are no cracks or chips. The raised decoration is of scrollwork variety with the bust of a medieval man at center.

With the image are two pieces of paper. One reads “ELIZABETH SCATTERGOOD” and the other reads “SISTER TO SARAH PHIPPS MORGAN.” Both labels look to be early 20th Century. A family by the name of Scattergood, including two women named Elizabeth, can be found in New Jersey in the 1850 census.  [AD]
