SIXTH PLATE AMBROTYPE OF CONFEDERATE SOLDIER IN MONITOR CASE

$850.00

Quantity Available: 1

Item Code: 1138-1893

This southern soldier is shown seated, resting one elbow on a table beside him. He wears a double-breasted frock coat and is likely an officer, though we don’t see any rank insignia. The image has solarization around the perimeter of the plate, giving the sitter something of a halo and vignetting him as a bust view, though the solarizing is thin and details on the coat sleeves and lower chest and below are visible. The soldier wears a thin mustache and pronounced sideburns. He might yet be identifiable.

The image is matted, glassed, and framed in a thermoplastic Monitor case, showing that famous ironclad on the front, with U.S. flag at the bow, sailing past a fort with U.S. flag, with a tree at left foreground and sloping hills on a far shore. The back half of the case is floral. The face of the case is good. The reverse of the case has a narrow crack on the back and a chip on the side. The brass mat has some spots of verdigris at left middle and upper right. The plate itself has a few small spots at right and along the edge of the mat. [sr] [ph:m]
