ARMED YOUNG CONFEDERATE WHO LOOKS LIKE HE HAS SEEN THE ELEPHANT

This sixth plate ambrotype is housed in a leatherette case with repaired hinge. The subject is a young southern soldier clad in jacket showing six buttons and likely a quartermaster depot issue item. He also wears a gray forage cap showing glazed chinstrap and with what seems to be a button on the top, though whether dark brass or fabric covered is tough to tell. We also not that the cap shows no front seam, suggesting it may be a cap cover of some sort. Most noticeably, he holds what looks like a 5-inch Colt pocket revolver across his chest.

What attracts our attention, however, is that he looks deeply tanned, suggesting service in the field, and that he has rather carelessly arranged his uniform collar, and looks somewhat down and to the viewer’s right, almost disengaged, weary if not despondent, which forms a rather interesting contrast to the martial pose displaying a pistol, perhaps suggested by the photographer.

The case is embossed with geometric motifs and shells in the corners. The facing pad, embossed mat, glass and frame are intact. The repair of the taped hinge is coming loose and should redone. This is a rather haunting image.  [sr] [ph:L]
