NINTH PLATE AMBROTYPE OF CS SOLDIER LEANING IN FOR A PHOTO

This very young southern soldier is literally leaning into the camera’s field of vision from the viewer’s left. It looks rather like the photographer was anxious to get as many customers in the front door and out the back as fast as possible and rather than take the time to move the camera or rearrange things simply said, “Just lean a little this ways, son- ah, that’s fine…. Next!” He also created a rather charming image that gives the impression of the young soldier looking in on us and about to be on his way.

The boy is clean-shaven and very young. The photographer lightly tinted his cheeks and lips, which emphasizes his age. He wears a typically Confederate gray jacket with standing collar. The photograph shows him from just above the waist and bareheaded. Seven brass buttons are visible, which the photographer just touched lightly with a thin gold. The image is just a tad light, but very clear and very telling for all its simplicity.

There are a few very tiny spots of rubbing from the mat around the edge of the plate. The mat, glass and frame are intact. It is housed in the bottom half of a leatherette case with the clasp still present. We would not recase it. There is something about the whole presentation the embodies a fleeting moment preserved by chance with both the subject and viewer about to move on.  [sr] [ph:L]
