This quarterplate ambrotype shows a Louisiana Confederate officer, a lieutenant by the look of his shoulder straps and large, but apparently single-braid, sleeve knots and cap trim. He is shown standing and at full length. He has posed in a rather authoritative stance with his hands on his hips, drawing back the lower portion of his frock coat, which has carefully left buttoned at the throat. The pose is clearly meant to convey he is a soldier, used to giving commands, and does not have to submit to petty requirements such as keeping his coat completely buttoned to be obeyed. The slightly disdainful look on his face completes the impression.
The photographer has lightly gilt the officer’s buttons and braid. It is noticeable, but not obtrusive. He has also lightly tinted his cheeks and to our eye has used the same thin red tint on his shoulder straps and trousers. If so, we need not think of him so much as in the artillery, but a very French-influenced unit, typical of those coming out of the New Orleans area. The coat certainly looks like it would be a trim fit and the trousers just large enough to be fashionable. The officer’s coat and cap are dark, which fits with an early war date for southern units. Some Federal volunteers were similarly uniformed, but the beaded cuff, with its small buttons highlighted from cuff almost to elbow, is a characteristic of Confederate officer’s coats from the western theatre. (See, for example, the CS artillery officer’s coat of Maj. J.A.A. West, chief of artillery for the Department of Alabama, Mississippi and Louisiana, pictured on page 369 of Confederate Odyssey.)
The image shows some solarization around the periphery of the plate, but only touches the figure at one elbow and across the knees, in both cases just darkening the image slightly. It is housed in a very nice figural thermoplastic case showing the capture of Andre on the cover. The facing pad, glass, mat, and frame are all in place. [sr] [ph:m]
