This very clear sixth-plate ambrotype shows a Confederate artillery private in a short, gray jacket and gray pants. The jacket shows shoulder straps and eight buttons on the front, with a ninth likely concealed from the camera at bottom, and two on each cuff. He is shown from the knees up, leans slightly back to appear very straight and has opened his jacket in the middle to thrust his hand inside the lapel in a credible imitation of Napoleon.

The photographer lightly tinted his cheeks and has delicately gilded his buttons. He has also very carefully colored red the narrow piping on the outer seam of the soldier’s pants, edges of his shoulder straps, and the top and front edge of his collar. There is no doubt about his branch of service. The jacket is similar to Richmond Depot patterns, but the style was widespread and made by other depots, as well as tailors, family members, etc. In many ways it is the quintessential Confederate enlisted uniform, a natty response to both the federal fatigue sack coat and dress frock coat.

Our man is dressed for the occasion, with a tie fastened at his collar, white shirt cuffs showing, hair combed back, and a neatly trimmed mustache. The photographer has posed him against a plain backdrop, putting the emphasis entirely on him and the image has great tones and clarity. We see just one tiny spot on his shoulder strap at left. He comes across perhaps more as a mature soldier able to keep his uniform in good condition than a new recruit showing off for the folks back home. In both cases, however, the images were meant to serve as both indicators to friends and family of patriotic service and mementos in case they did not come home.

The image is housed in an embossed leatherette case with some slight rubs and is complete with mat, frame, glass, and facing pad in place. This would look great in a collection of Confederate images or be a key piece in an artillery display. [sr] [ph:L]
