Early war image of an unknown 2nd lieutenant standing with one arm resting on a drum that is balanced on a cloth covered table.
The officer wears a dark nine button frockcoat with matching dark trousers. The coat has light piping outlining the collar and 2nd lieutenant’s shoulder straps. Trousers also have a light leg stripe. Subject holds a kepi at his side while at his waist is a belt with a two-piece circular plate. The plate has some gilt on it but there is also a scratch in this area obscuring any seal or eagle that might be visible.
The officer rests his left hand on top of a full-sized snare drum that is of a wider circumference than the table it rests on. Looking closely at the drum one can see the cloth sling which is decorated with a floral pattern. Just visible above the upper rim are the heads of the drumsticks. The sticks look to be tucked between the body of the drum and the tension rope with the heads rising just above the rim.
Contrast and clarity are good but there is scattered oxidation above and below the drum and off to one side and above the subject’s head. There is also some oxidation around the edges. None of this affects the image itself.
Image comes in a full leather case with a repaired spine with decorative brass mat and stamped brass frame. The brass does show some light surface dirt. [ad] [ph:L]
