Portraits of husbands with wives or family are among the most telling of Civil War photographs as not only a memento treasured by those at home of someone who might not return, but also of what the soldier was leaving behind to go to war. This quarter-plate size ambrotype shows a Union line officer, identified by his single-breasted frock coat, conventionally posed seated with his wife standing next to him, one arm resting on the back of his chair. He looks slightly to his left, directly at the camera. She looks more straight ahead, as if her thoughts were elsewhere, as well they might be, wondering about the future.
She is clothed in early 1860s fashion, in dark dress with long sleeves, lace cuffs and collar, her hair tightly coiffed, and wearing earrings and a small brooch at her neck. He has his coat open revealing a dark vest and part of a checkered shirt. There is a tiny bit of gilding and light blue added to the one shoulder strap visible indicating he is second lieutenant of infantry.
The image is in good condition, showing some minor rubs and scratches, nothing too obtrusive, and a black, white and gray tone. The gilt brass mat with floral designs, frame, and glass are in place. The mat shows a torn edge piece on the reverse, which does have the advantage of showing how the elements are layered. As is usually the case with ambrotypes the image is laterally reversed, with the coat buttons appearing to be on the officer’s left lapel.
This is a subtle, but somewhat provocative portrait. She is definitely looking solemn and in her own thoughts. He looks a little wary or on edge, like he is expecting something soon. [sr][ph:L]
