This photograph shows a bearded soldier seated, at half length, showing his wife or the folks back home that he is keeping warm in his army-issue overcoat. This is the regulation pattern for foot troops, sky-blue and thus showing light, with the standing collar turned down, the long cuffs turned up, and showing the elbow-length cape fastened by six small buttons, five of which are visible, and five larger ones visible on the single-breasted coat front.
The photographer has delicately tinted the sitter’s cheeks, but fortunately avoided applying any gold paint to the brass buttons. The clarity is excellent, but the image does show a thin halo of solarization around the soldier’s head and shoulders, in a soft bust effect, just slightly shading his shoulders down the elbow. Other than that we only a small spot on the back of his hand at left. The image is matted, framed, and glassed. The thermoplastic case is excellent and bear intricate, dense foliate and geometric motifs with wide raised border, inner latticework panel, and central rosette. The interior embossed purple velvet facing pad in there, showing just some slight rubs at top and left edge. [sr][ph:L]
