This standing view of a Federal cavalry serviceman shows him in a war-ready pose, with saber drawn and full uniform with formal appointments.
Touched up by hand, as is often a feature of original photos to make them catch light during display, each brass item is highlighted in brilliant gold including his forage cap insignia, shoulder epaulettes, the yellow braided tape trim of his jacket, and the brass hilt assembly of his cross-drawn cavalry saber.
The gutta percha case measures 3.75” x 3.23” and features a classic, period patriotic motif with crossed cannons, war trophies, Federal shields, and United States flags. The case itself is undamaged but the front panel is very slightly loose from the brass hinges. The interior velvet cushion is a nice shade of red with embossed floral pattern. The gilded frame shines brightly with a female and castle motif among floral and geometric patterns.
An excellent image of a Federal cavalryman with full appointments and a proud, service-ready pose. [cm][ph:L]
