This great image features a US soldier in his dress frock and dark blue trousers, which were less commonly seen in the ranks as the Civil War dragged on and army regulations of 1861 mandated a change to the familiar light blue shade. He sports epaulets with hand accented gold highlighting, a “Type I” style forage cap, and an ornate pipe. The buttons along his single-breasted coat are also hand-accented with gold paint the light blue piping on his frock is very visible. Resting on his lap with eyes closed is his faithful companion, a spotted puppy.
The image is mounted in a one-piece thermoplastic case with an open front, and a stamped brass frame with floral and geometric patterns. A piece of glass protects the image front and a darkened piece of glass in rear of the image provides the contrast. The case is in good condition with only minor chips at the left top and bottom corners. Overall measurements are 4.35” x 4.9”.
An excellent and humanizing photo from the Civil War – an ideal addition to any collection. [cm] [ph:L]
