A ninth-plate ambrotype of seated Union cavalryman with a great patriotic mat. The soldier is shown half-length, his legs crossed and hands folded in his lap. There is a ring of solarization around the edge of the oval mat, but the figure is clear enough to show the he has a narrow, thin, chinbeard, and wears a regulation army dress or “Hardee” hat, with the brim turned up on one side and fitted with a regulation set of crossed sabers on the front indicating cavalry, with some of the tasseled ends of his hat cord showing. His jacket is the regulation dark blue mounted services jacket, with high collar trimmed with small buttons like those down the front of his jacket and on his cuff, with yellow lace forming false buttonholes on the collar and running down the front of his jacket and forming a chevron on his cuffs, though showing dark because of the photographic process. His pants show lighter, clearly the regulation light blue.
The image is glassed, matted, and cased in leatherette case with floral decorated cover, back and facing pad, the case showing some rubs and separated on the hinge. The mat is a very good condition, patriotic mat with oval opening, US flags at the upper corners, a drum at bottom left and a cannon at bottom right with a ribbon scroll running along the edge of the opening between them, reading: “THE UNION NOW AND FOREVER,” a rather unambiguous expression of his sentiments and loyalty.
