This is a fine photograph of a Union Drum-Major (or Principal Musician) in uniform. This is a seated studio pose with this unidentified soldier wearing a 9-button frock and holding his kepi in his lap. Upon his sleeves are rarely seen Drum-Major's chevrons with a star in the middle. He also wears a blue tinted (3rd Division) 2nd Corps badge; the blue tint makes it harder to see. Buttons, cap insignia, and ordnance star are all gilded. Image is clear with good contrast.

Sixth-plate ambrotype typically encased with copper mat and under glass all held together with copper frame wrap. Photograph is in a "Union" gutta purcha hard case with raised geometric design on both halves. Case is in very good condition with no cracks or chips. [jet] [ph:L]
