A sixth-plate ambrotype, dating from the early to mid-1850s, matted, glassed and framed in the bottom half of geometric and foliate embossed leatherette case. A young couple are shown from the knees up, seated. The figures are clear with good detail, though with scattered spotting to the emulsion, and darker areas around the edge next to the mat, as shown. The case shows some minor abrasions.
The man is posed with his top hat on, one arm around the shoulder of the girl seated next to him and his other hand resting on the edge of her skirt. The photographer has gilded her necklace, his watch chain and rings worn by both, and delicately tinted their cheeks red. He looks into the camera; she looks down and to the viewer’s right. Both are well dressed and one would expect the portrait shows a young married couple, but they have carried the conventional serious poses expected in photographic portraits to something in the extreme, leaving one to wonder if something had not gone terribly wrong between the wedding vows and the portrait. The pose somewhat suggests the photographer was trying to encourage some show of affection, and not having much luck. An intriguing image. [sr][ph:L]
