This sixth-plate ambrotype shows a well-bearded soldier with lots of character looking directly into the camera with enough clarity to see studio lighting reflected in his eye and clearly see the veins on the back of his hand. He wears his jacket or coat open to the lower chest, showing his shirt front, but with the lapels and collar turned back in a rather casual, but dynamic pose. Only two of the coat buttons show, and the photographer has gilded them slightly, but they are fairly close together. Combined with what looks like a tall collar and a pointed chevron showing on his cuff, it makes us wonder if we are not looking at a U.S. mounted services jacket.
This is identified on the back of the image as “W. D. Middleton / 3rd Kentucky Cavalry / C.S.A.” This does not appear to us to be old, but could be a family identification. We do find a William Middleton in Company I of the Confederate 3rd Kentucky Cavalry, but his middle initial shows up as “M” in CWData and “F” in Fold3, though in the latter case it may be a machine reading error from a cropped digital image. In either case, the difference in the middle initial and the possibility of Federal mounted jacket gives us pause in the identification, though none of these are impossible for a Confederate photo. We have assumed the state identification is valid and this an interesting image in any case.
The photo is housed in figural thermoplastic case showing stags under a tree on both sides, in good condition, but some rubs on the high points. The Halverson and Peck patent label for the case is present in the back of the case along with a label reading, “Wane & Rothwell / Photographers.” They were British photographers based at Douglas, on the Isle of Man, about 1860 so we expect the image was re-cased by a collector simply aesthetic reasons.
