This is a wonderful antique, circa 1850s daguerreotype image of a woman, framed in a 1/6th plate size “Union” or thermoplastic case. The case is known as “Liberty” and listed in Berg, a leading authority on these types of cases as number 1-67S.
The daguerreotype image itself is of a woman seated at a table, herself posed holding a thermoplastic photo case. The image is in good condition with typical “ghostly” affect when not viewing from straight on. The lady’s brooch at her neck has been gilted.
The case, when closed, measures 3.75” by 3.25”. The exterior scene depicted is of a seated maiden with an outstretched arm as the centerpiece. On either side are items of trade and commerce. In the background are a locomotive and side wheel sailing ship. Inside the case is a red velvet lining on one side and the photograph on the other. The glass daguerreotype image is covered with a copper mat, a piece of glass, and then wrapped with a copper frame to hold all together.
One half of the case has two fine cracks emanating from the lower, right corner with a small chip missing from the closure clip. It was unprofessionally glued. The other half of the case remains in perfect condition. Hinges and closure work as they should.
This piece is in good condition overall and a fine specimen of this type of image and patriotic case. [jet][ph:L]
