This young lady is the same from another sixth plate daguerreotype in our inventory [1221-94], but in this photo sports quite the formal outfit. An ornate broach joins her lace collar and accents her corseted top made of fine cotton or silk with trimmed cuffs. Her hands are covered by lace gloves, and she holds a folded fan across her lap. A short hairstyle accentuates the hint of joy on her face as she holds for the camera’s long exposure time.
The case is virtually as new with a period harvest relief, showing cut grain, corn, tools, and a bordering floral pattern. The velvet interior is a plum color with an embossed floral wreath design. The frame border is rectangular with small accents, with a stamped leaf edge design. A single brass closure operates as-new, as do both hinges that join the case halves. The case measures 3.75”x 3.25”.
This, perhaps along with the other view of this woman, would make an excellent addition to any photography collection. Home front photos could be found in every camp of the Civil War, providing comfort and motivation for the fighting men far from home. [cm][ph:L]
