A very good condition daguerreotype housed in a dark brown leather case. The glass is free of cracks and the matting all fits tight. The inner scalloped frame shows a shadow on the image surface, indicating that the set has been together since production.

The image shows a curly haired lady wearing a plaid dress. She is delicately holding an infant in her lap, with arms folded peaceably. The infants’ eyes are completely closed. The baby is wearing a white outfit that appears to be lightly tinted blue. Her identity and cause of death may never be known.

Due to the costly nature of photography at the time, this was probably the only picture ever taken of her. Certainly, a cherished reminder by a loved one. Circa 1850 to 1860’s.   [stp][ph:L]
