The first image in this double quarter-plate case is a full seated tintype of a Union cavalryman. The subject is posed holding is Model 1860 cavalry saber between his knees. He wears a dark cavalry shell jacket with buttoned downed front and trousers that have been lightly tinted sky-blue. The soldier wears gauntlets on his hands and stuffed in his waistband is a Colt revolver.

Image has decent clarity but is not crystal clear. Contrast is good.

Mat is wonderfully bright with a floral decoration and a scrollwork frame.

The second image is a bust view tintype of a young lady with tinted cheeks. Her hair is parted in the middle and cut short. She wears a dark dress with a thin light collar.

Clarity and contrast is excellent.

Mat is similar to its mate being of a floral scroll design.

Both images are housed in a wonderful Union case with a decoration titled “UNION AND CONSTITUTION.” Front and back have a raised scrollwork border with a great raised patriotic decoration. This consists of a spread-winged eagle at center, perched on a patriotic shield flanked by cannons. Rising behind the eagle are four US flags, two on each side, with tents in the background. The case has a thin closed crack across the top edge on one side and there is one small chip off of one corner. Aside from these imperfections the case presents very well. Both brass hinges are good.  Written in pencil behind the cavalryman’s image is “1st PA CAV / B___ Werne’s / ____ py”.  [ad]
