Here is a great ninth plate tintype of an unidentified clean-shaven New Yorker wearing the quintessential shell jacket issued to soldiers in New York regiments. The shoulder tabs, high collar, and piping are the clues here. Unfortunately, the image clarity is such that the buttons cannot be clearly identified as New York buttons. The soldier is seated with an intense look on his face.
The image itself is in good, stable condition. There is one blemish on the left-hand side of the soldier’s face where the emulsion has lifted but this does not obscure the soldier or detract from the photograph in any way. No scratches or bends are present in the tin.
This tintype comes housed in a ninth plate thermoplastic case; glass, mat, and keeper are all intact. A nice embossed, deep burgundy, velvet liner is present opposite the soldier’s image. The hinges of the case are intact and functional albeit a bit loose. There is minor fraying of the piece that secures the tintype in place in the case. No chips or cracks are present in the case.
