SIXTH-PLATE TIN OF A UNION SOLDIER READY TO EAT

$2,250.00 SOLD

Quantity Available: None

Item Code: 2021-931

Clean shaven young looking Union soldier sits cross legged on the ground with his tin plate balanced on his ankles and holding his fork and spoon in a ready position. Next to him is a wood crate set on its side with the soldier’s tin cup on top next to another plate that holds his cap box. (Perhaps the cap box was placed there to look like a hunk of pork?) The subject wears a dark slouch hat, four –button sack coat and trousers, lightly tinted sky-blue. He also wears a belt rig with rectangular sword belt plate with shoulder support strap hinting that he may be a cavalryman.

Clarity is very good but the contrast is a bit light. There is also a line of oxidation along the edge. There is a horizontal wrinkle in the emulsion visible across the center of the image; this was brought out by the digital camera's flash, and is not visible with the naked eye unless tilted in the right light.

Image has the usual decorative brass mat and stamped brass frame all housed in a Union case with an exterior decoration of a raised scrolled shield with a geometric pattern at center on a plain field. Case is in excellent condition.

Images of soldiers with their mess equipment are rare and much sought after. [ad] [ph:L]
