Knees-up view of an unidentified Union soldier wearing a dark forage cap, dark frockcoat and light trousers. He wears a cartridge box with a sling plate that has been touched with gilt and a waistbelt with cap box and empty bayonet scabbard. Belt has a Pattern 1839 oval US plate outlined with gilt. The subject is posed with his Model 1842 musket at the position of “ATTENTION.” His bayonet is fixed to the muzzle of his weapon.
