GUTTA PERCHA DOUBLE “OREO” CASE HOLDING TWO IMAGES – FROM THE BELONGINGS OF A 123RD OHIO SOLDIER

$120.00 SOLD

Quantity Available: None

Item Code: 846-543

Small, dark green “Oreo” case holding two small tintypes. One of a bearded young man in a dark civilian suit and the other of a woman who appears to be a few years older wearing a plain light-colored dress with a white lace collar. Both images are in nice condition.

The case meas. approx. 3.00 x 1.75 inches with a very nice crosshatched and raised floral decoration. One edge shows two moderate chips ad two small ones but these do not hurt the case. All the decoration is present and the case opens and closes properly.

Double “Oreo” cases are a bit rare and not often encountered.

There is no ID on the case or images but they came in with several other items identified to Private Henry Gibson of the 123rd Ohio. His other items will shortly appear on our website.

Henry Gibson was 20 years old when he enlisted as a private in Company E, 123rd Ohio Infantry on August 20, 1862. He was captured with many others in his regiment at Winchester on June 15, 1863.

Gibson was paroled with the rest of his regiment in September of 1863 only to be wounded in both legs at Opequan, Virginia on September 19, 1864. The “CLYDE ENTERPRISE” of September 21, 1911 mentions in passing that after Gibson was wounded, “he lay on the field for many hours” before help arrived

He was discharged at Philadelphia, Pennsylvania on May 1, 1865.

After the war he returned to his Clyde, Ohio home where he was active in regimental reunions being one of the last seven veterans to survive into the 20th Century.

His place of death and burial is not known.

With the item is a Xerox copy of the display card that came with Gibson’s items.  [AD] [ph:L]
