A fine image of a Federal enlisted man in dress uniform.
The young man in this photograph is finely appointed in a Federal issue dress coat, commonly referred to as a frock coat. The light blue piping of the collar is clearly visible, as is the piping around each cuff. Under the frock is a smart vest in indigo wool broadcloth, partially buttoned to accommodate a long watch chain. His light blue Federal issue trousers fall neatly on each of his issued Jefferson Bootees, or “Brogans”. His “Type I” style Forage Cap rests near his hand on a covered parlor table, revealing a swept hairstyle. The base of the stabilizing brace is visible at ground level, as is the vertical portion of the brace behind his slightly bent leg.
The contrast of the image makes it difficult to note full details in the lower 1/5 of plate, but brilliantly highlights the striking details of the rest of the photo – from the pattern of the table cover, to the shine of this man’s Federal buttons.
The gutta percha case measures 3.9” x 4.9” and features the fictional character “Roger de Coverley”, who contributed writings to the popular magazine “The Spectator” from the point of view of an 18th century landed nobleman. This Roger de Coverley relief was likely meant to signify that this young man was thought of as a noble young man from the country. The left corners of the case are lightly chipped, and there is a small crack near the corner closest to the lower hinge but it has no effect on functionality or the integrity of the case. The case fastens securely with two, flat brass hooks and when opened, features a pressed floral design in the velvet lining, and a beautiful, gilded frame with symmetrical geometric and floral patterns.
A fine addition to any Civil War photography collection. [cm][ph:L]
