This ¼-plate tintype shows a Union infantryman seated at a table from the knees up. He leans on the table, covered with a tablecloth, with one elbow and is clothed in a regulation single-breasted infantry overcoat with cape, worn open to show a dark single-breasted enlisted frock coat, dark trousers, and wears a pair of gauntlets with dark, likely waterproof, cuffs and light colored hands, clearly a commercial purchase since the only thing the army issued for wear on the hands was dress gloves. The soldier looks mature, likely in his thirties, wears somewhat long hair, a chin-beard, and has had his cheeks tinted the slightly red by the photographer.
The image is matted, glassed, framed and cased. The mat is oval and bears an impressed foliate scroll and geometric design that is mirrored to some degree by the floral and geometric design impressed in the purple velvet facing pad, showing only minor wear. The case is a thermoplastic figural case bearing a “lady with falcon” motif, showing an Elizabethan lady riding side-saddle, with a falcon on one arm and a page running beside her to keep up, along with a hunting dog. The bird raises its wings as if about the fly off. A castle is visible to the left in the distance. The condition is very good, with the scene impressed on both sides, crisply done, and with only some shallow, narrow chips to the edge of the case, not affecting the scene.
This is a nice image, clearly taken in a winter camp and most likely sent home as keepsake. [sr][ph:L]
