This is a very clear ¼ plate tintype showing a soldier seated at left, wearing a military frock coat with brass buttons, light-blue tinted trousers and a fez with tassel. He rests one hand on the shoulder of an older man seated next to him who has enough of a likeness to show him to be the soldier’s father. The older man is formally dressed, with vest, cravat, watchchain showing, etc., and stares straight into the camera through his spectacles. The son wears a chin-beard that adds some years to his appearance. He wears his frock with the collar rolled over and the lapel open to show a dark vest, closed by small brass buttons that have been lightly gilt like those on his coat. A narrow dark line on his cuff may be the cuff chevron of a regulation infantry frock. His trousers have been tinted a regulation light blue and show no stripe or piping, so he is certainly a private. The fez might suggest a zouave, but given the rest of his uniform it probably functions as a camp or smoking cap, though a number of companies in otherwise federal or state regulation uniforms seem to have informally adopted them as uniform (some in the 23rd NY for instance.) In any case, the soldier has a slight smile and the gesture of resting his hand on his father’s shoulder seems one of affection and pride, that at least the old man showed up in camp to see him off to war. The old man is rather expressionless, perhaps out of a sense of formality in the photographer’s studio, or the seriousness of the occasion, which may not yet have dawned on the son.

The image is nicely matted, glassed and framed in brown leatherette case with gilt blind-stamped edges inside and out, embossed floral motifs on both the front and back, and crimson velvet facing pad with foliate scrolls and floral motifs. The image is very clear, showing just a few small spots and one speck on the father’s shirtfront, with good contrast, very slight tinting to the cheeks of the sitters, the dad’s tie and the son’s trousers, and relatively thin gilding to the son’s buttons and the dad’s watchchain.  [sr][ph:L]
