This uncommon tintype photograph is a “gem” sized (1” x 1.5”) photo of one of the popular Lincoln mourning art images of the immediate post-assassination period. The image is framed in brass with gilt and an oval presentation. The frame itself is mounted to a CDV card with commercial modifications to secure the mounting in the form of horizontal slits, through which the edges of the frame slide and grip when bent to form.
The face of the card shows some light handling dirt and a horizontal crease along the photo frame’s top edge. A double gold line border traces the card’s edges. The reverse features a printed label reading “Multiplying GALLERY, / STANSBURY & CO. / 431 Market St. between 4th and 5th / Over Hooe & Peters’ China Store. / Louisville, Ky”. A pasted piece of lined paper fully encloses the open reverse of the mounting slot.
An interesting tribute to the late President Lincoln – perfect for the Lincoln or broader Civil War collector. [cm][ph:L]
