This is a massive “dug” artillery projectile for the 7” Brooke rifle. Of Confederate manufacture, this is a shell with two bourrelet rings, and copper sabot bolted to the bottom.

Projectile was manufactured following John Brooke's design. The sabot system utilized a copper disc held in place by ratchet ribs cast into both the heavy sabot and shell body, and secured with a center bolt. This allowed the parts made of different metals, copper and iron, to be prepared independently and assembled at the end. This pattern utilized two raised bourrelet rings so only the rings had to be accurately machined, the majority of the body could be left rough.

Projectile measures approximately 16.4” tall. The copper sabot is nearly 1.5” thick and held in place by an iron bolt, the nut having rusted off.

Overall condition is good. Iron has moderate surface pitting with some patches of flaking.  [jet]  [ph:L]
