This size shell was used in the 4.5” siege rifle. This shell measures 4.4” in diameter and 12.5” long. This unusual looking artillery shell features vertical ribs on the tapered base. Notice the slightly rebated area on the body.
In operation, it would have employed a papier-mache sabot and had a brass percussion fuse screwed into the nose. Neither are present.
This shell is in excellent condition with nice dark patina on the iron. [jet] [ph:M/L]
