This is the short pattern fuse adapter for use in spherical artillery shells. These replaced the Bormann time fuses, which had a high rate of failure, in the Spring of 1863 and continued to be used to the end of the war.
These adapters were cast and then turned on a lathe. This one is threaded with the typical 12 threads per inch. A central hole was drilled out to accept the paper time fuse (and a burnt paper fuse remains). All featured a flanged head with two spanner holes. This specimen measures 1.37” long x 1.35” across the flange. This example has a little taper to the lower portion.
This fuse adapter is in good condition and has a dirt covered green-brown patina. [jet] [ph:m]
