This is a CS Read pattern shell that was fired and burst in the ground. All parts were recovered and the pieces reassembled. Overall, the iron shows only minor surface pitting and the reconstructed shell has been painted black. The two bourrelets and lathe lug at the nose are present. This shell used a tapered wood fuse adaptor which is gone. Half of the brass sabot is intact, and shows rifling marks very well. Overall a decent example of a Confederate shell. Recovered near Winchester, VA. [jet] [ph:L]
