Bullet struck pieces of trees were valued by veterans as an illustration of the intensity of the fire they endured, as a moment of the battle frozen in time, and occasionally as a commentary on nature versus man’s destructive tendencies. Matthew Brady expended quite a number of negatives here on Culps Hill showing bullet and shell scarred trees.

This is a good example of a piece of tree showing an embedded .58 caliber Minie ball. It is slightly deformed at the base, showing it was fired, but not so much as hide the fact it is a standard U.S. “3-ring” style bullet typical of those fired the many Springfield pattern rifle muskets made by the National Armory and many contractors during the war.

This has not been treated with anything. The bullet is in place, as it has been for more than 150 years.  [jet] [ph:L]
