This excavated Federal belt plate is of the regulation 1839 pattern. Constructed with a die-struck and rolled brass face and lead filled, this accoutrement’s face shows a clear “US”. While in “relic” condition, the face shows no dings or dents and displays a perfect chocolate brown patina. Some dirt remains in edges.
Lead filled back retains 98% of lead fill, with just slight loss around edge. A light maker’s mark, “H A DINGEE” is visible at the single belt hook. This is the style with brass “arrow” hooks; all three hooks remain.
Recovered in 1996 along the North Anna River in Virginia. [jet] [ph:L]
