Excavated cartridge for Burnside carbine. This easily recognized cartridge was made of drawn brass and features the “swell” around the bullet at the case mouth. This swell held lubricant and was patented by George P. Foster (#27,791 dated April 10, 1860).

Bullet shows gray patina. Brass case is brownish-green, slightly flattened, with two small cracks at the swell. “BRANDY STATION” is written on one side.

A nice relic cartridge from one of the largest cavalry battles.   [jet] [ph:jet]
