This excavated Pattern 1839 oval US cartridge box plate has a dirt-covered, dark patina. The brass face is smooth with a central “US”, except for one spot where iron wire is rusting through from reverse. This would likely benefit from a little cleaning.
The plate’s reverse has 99% of the lead fill remaining. One of the two iron loops remains and “W.H. SMITH / BROOKLYN” is stamped into the lead.
Recovered near Fredericksburg, Virginia. [jet] [PH:L]
