This is a single, excavated Smith Patent “triple border” shoulder strap. This style of shoulder strap was made using stamped brass, false embroidered borders to imitate bullion embroidery. These borders were then fastened to a cloth backing by pins on the reverse.
This is in good condition considering it is an excavated relic. Much of the gilt finish remains on the top surface. There are a number of slight bends, a few pin holes, and one break. Solder marks and a few wires remain on the back.
Recovered near Orange, Virginia. [jet] [ph:L]
